Macarons vs.
Macaroons

MACARON

A Macaron (pronounced mac-ah-ron) is a French cookie made of finely ground almond flour suspended in a meringue. This technique requires practice and perfection to create the desired chewy texture, super thin crust, and raised “feet” at the bottom of each cookie. Macarons are made up of two cookies sandwiched together with various fillings in between, usually including a buttercream or ganache. The coloring and flavoring of the cookies and fillings varies widely, with endless possibilities.

MACAROON

A Macaroon (pronounced mac-uh-roon) is a cookie made up of mainly shredded coconut mixed with whipped egg whites and sugar — an iteration of meringue that's not as light as the macaron’s recipe. Macaroons are larger, denser and chewier that macarons, and easier to make. Chopped dried fruit or chocolate can also be added to them for extra flavors. They are usually not colored, and have less flavor variety than macarons.
